The Ministry of Planning announced on Sunday the launch of national consultations for the preparation of the third voluntary sustainable development report in Iraq, in cooperation with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
This came during the first consultative workshop held by the ministry. Chaired by the Undersecretary for Technical Affairs, Dr. Maher Hammad Johan. who explained in a speech:
that Iraq will submit its third voluntary sustainable development report to the United Nations during its participation in the high-level political forum in New York in July. He stressed the importance of partnership with civil society organizations of all specializations and names. Because these organizations are a key part of society. He pointed out the importance of cooperation with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) by strengthening this cooperation in various fields. He pointed out that the third voluntary report will differ from the previous two reports in the form in which Iraq will submit it. He stressed the importance of the report and its role in highlighting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
For her part, Ms. Sondos Abbas, Director of the Program to Support Iraq in Sustainable Development at the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), said: “These consultations represent an essential step in the preparation of Iraq’s third voluntary report: These consultations represent an essential step in the preparation of Iraq’s third voluntary report, especially that the participation of civil society is essential to enhance transparency and confirm the collective commitment to achieving sustainable development and the 2030 Agenda. “Iraqi civil society, with its various institutions, associations and activities, is a key pillar in the process of sustainable development by enhancing community participation, empowering vulnerable groups, and promoting social justice. The involvement of civil society organizations in the preparation of the voluntary report enhances its credibility and provides an opportunity to provide more comprehensive insights into the challenges and achievements of Iraq in implementing the SDGs.
The workshop included discussing important developments and achievements made by the Iraqi government in various fields during the past period, in addition to exchanging views and ideas on how to enhance cooperation between all concerned parties in order to formulate a report that reflects the reality in a comprehensive and accurate manner. The workshop also included a presentation on the themes of the report presented by expert Dr. Wafa Jaafar Al Mahdawi. The workshop was attended by the President of the Statistics and GIS Commission, Dr. Diaa Awad Kazim, a number of directors general, in addition to the President of the Umm Al-Yateem Organization for Development in Iraq, Dr. Amera Al-Baldawi, representatives of civil society organizations and a number of experts and university professors.
